Using all her senses, your baby is investigating her world and is learning very quickly. Enjoy this time of discovery by providing a wide variety of things for her to play with. Looking intently, handling, and mouthing, banging and dropping or throwing everything within reach is your baby’s way of relating to her world. Encourage her explorations.

What an enjoyable time this is with your baby! She is usually happy and outgoing, and loves to look at new faces. Her sense of humor is beginning to develop. This month she will probably laugh out loud as she is beginning to “get the joke.” She will enjoy funny expressions and may try to make you laugh.

It is important that your baby begin to understand that her actions cause responses. She is learning that her cries bring relief from discomfort, her smiles trigger smiles from her family and pulling on her mobile makes the objects move. All of these responses encourage her to try new things and to see the effect. Cause and effect is one of the first steps to learning that your baby takes.

You and your baby are establishing routines. These routines help your baby learn trust and to calm herself. Even though a diaper change comes first, she learns she can trust she will be fed next. In the rhythm of day and night she will be learning at night you keep the lights low, you don’t play, and you aren’t as talkative. She learns night is the time to be quiet and sleep. [Read more…]
